About Joe Miller

Joe realized he could draw at the age of twelve, when the charcoal sketch of his teacher actually resembled her.  In high school, he took Major Art because it was easy
and a way to raise his average.  He graduated Pratt Institute with a Fine Arts degree
in advertising.

Shortly after his stint in the Army, Joe married Carol and moved from Brooklyn to

Long Island, where he started his family.  As a designer/art director for 40 years, Joe worked with many gifted illustrators.  Inspired by them, he hoped to find the time to paint for himself some day.

Joe found time to paint portraits of his two children.  However, it wasn’t until retiring

in 2002, that Joe really began to paint.  His first was a portrait of his grandson which won second prize in a juried show.

Self taught, Joe paints in acrylic or oil, sometimes combining both.  He loves to tell

a story through his paintings.  Joe’s portraits are painted from life or photographs.

No matter the subject, he paints whatever interests him.  “I love to place people in my

paintings because people are the best story tellers”, he says.

Joe’s work has been shown in many galleries, libraries and museums on Long Island

and Connecticut where he has won several awards.
